I Would Live in Your Love

Set in A-flat major and dedicated to the ensemble’s founder Frances Slade, this work presents Sara Teasdale’s love poem, commissioned by Princeton Pro Musica as an auction item for the ensemble’s annual fundraiser. I marked the tempo Andante, ma con moto quasi ondulatorio, to suggest that the music move like sea-grasses swaying in the water, taking up Teasdale’s image of living in the beloved’s love. The poem’s opening line returns like a refrain, undulating each time but more elaborate at every return, with moments of text-painting throughout, such as at “I would beat with your heart as it beats” and “I would follow your soul as it leads.” An extended fughetta builds the voices before the final statement. I consider this work an intimate concert piece for a polished SATB ensemble. Here is Teasdale’s complete text:
I would live in your love as the sea-grasses live in the sea, Borne up by each wave as it passes, drawn down by each wave that recedes; I would empty my soul of the dreams that have gathered in me, I would beat with your heart as it beats, I would follow your soul as it leads.
The audio sample begins at measure 25.
