Liebesklage
Liebesklage (“Love’s lament”) is a short audition or recital piece in E minor for baritone or bass. The range is a comfortable minor ninth, from B2 to C4, sitting in the rich middle register where these voices are most expressive. The writing is slow and sustained, mostly stepwise, and showcases legato, breath control, and tone quality. The piece can be learned quickly while still making a strong impression. The complete rendition includes a two-bar piano introduction, and two verses of text.
The song itself is a German folk tune dating from 1799: the singer accepts that he must die, and imagines his sweetheart planting a rose on his grave, but asks what good a flower can do after death. I took the traditional melody, transposed it to suit the baritone-bass range, and wrote an original piano accompaniment to support its quiet, grieving character.
I prepared the English translation myself, keeping it close to literal so that each German word carries its specific weight for the singer. The purchased edition also includes my own IPA transcription of the complete text. (I served as German diction coach for Princeton Pro Musica for nearly a decade, and have coached language and diction for the Stanford Memorial Church Choir and for Schola Cantorum in California.) On request and for an additional fee, I can provide a transposed version of this work to suit any voice part.
The audio sample is the complete song. Here is the German text and my translation:
| Sterben ist ein’ schwere Buß’, weiß wohl, daß ich sterben muß. Und ein Röslein rosenrot pflanzt mein Schatz nach meinem Tod. |
To die is a heavy penance, I know well that I must die. And a little rose, rosy-red, my sweetheart will plant after my death. |
| Denn was hilft ein Blümelein, wenn es heißt: ins Grab hinein! Ach, was hilft ein Röslein rot, wenn es blüht nach Liebes Tod! |
But what help is a little flower, if it means: into the grave! Oh, what help is a little red rose, if it blooms after a love’s death! |
